Non-Stop Tracking with FSN Extended Batteries

If a battery dies in the middle of deployment, how much risk and cost do you add to your security operations to swap the battery?

Why find out? FSN has devised an extended battery solution for the PT200—the only one of its kind—that meets the rigors of our customers’ covert tracking operations. Whether you’re tracking a suspect during an extended investigation, or your load needs to travel across the continental United States, FSN Extended Batteries will go the distance.

During product trials, FSN Extended Battery (10.4 External AHr) lasted over 10 days during a trip from Monterrey, Mexico to Calgary, Canada without interruption to FSNtracks covert trackingand still had battery life left!

This product trial demonstrates the longevity of the FSN Extended Batteries as well as FSNtracks' ability to provide continuous covert tracking across a wide and diverse geographic area.

FSN offers two Extended Battery options:

  • FSN 10.4 AHr (3.7V) 4-Cell Li-Ion Extended Battery
  • FSN 15.6 AHr (3.7V) 6-Cell Li-Ion Extended Battery

These Extended Batteries require FSN’s custom Printed Circuit Board (PCB) that replaces the Sendum PT200 factory-supplied battery. The result? Three to five times more battery capacity.

Pictured at the left is the FSN 15.6 AHr Extended Battery.

If you’re not sure you need the tracking longevity of the FSN Extended Batteries, how do you make the decision? Unfortunately, determining how long a battery will last in a given situation is difficult to estimate without an actual trial. Here are several factors that influence covert tracking battery life:

  • Cellular coverage throughout the tracking area—The stronger the cellular coverage in the deployment area the less work needed to communicate with cell towers, resulting in longer battery life. Consult a Sprint coverage map to determine your deployment conditions.
  • Reporting frequency—How often you ask the tracking device to report its location greatly influences the rate at which battery power is consumed. If you want to extend your battery life, a simple change is to request less frequent location updates.
  • Access to un-impaired GPS signals—Although the PT200 can be hidden inside a vehicle or its cargo and still function without a clear view of the sky, this configuration does consume battery power at a faster rate. GPS satellite signals easily pass through glass, plastic and translucent materials like fiberglass.  GPS signals also reflect off road surfaces.  For best results, trackers should have a clear view of the sky.  Otherwise, covertly placed trackers consume battery power more rapidly because they must work harder to determine and communicate location.

Overall, the FSN Extended Batteries provide 3-5 times more power than the 3.6AHr Sendum brand battery.  In ideal conditions, FSN has measured the following operational characteristics:

  • FSN 4-cell battery reporting every 10 minutes lasted 23 days.
  • FSN 4-cell battery reporting every hour lasted 47 days.
  • FSN 6-cell battery reporting every 8 hours lasted 12 weeks.
